The Importance of Effective Goal
Setting
Those Who Do Not Set Goals Spend Their
Lives Achieving Other People's
Goal setting and achievement are important parts
of our lives, in fact so important that it can make or
break us not just financially but also in terms of
achievement and self esteem, but of course I am preaching
to the converted because you already found this page and
started reading this article right?
For those who do not grasp this concept though,
a cautionary tale...
During a consultation I had with a building
contractor a couple of years ago I shared this simple
truth and in no more than a few words literally changed
someone's life. *Please note that due to privacy of
private consultation clients I will call him
“Derek.”
Derek initially came to see me for stress
related issues after a friend of his had attended one of
my stress management courses. During the initial
consultation I realised that Derek was suffering from a
great deal more stress then he realised.
The crux of it was that Derek felt that he never
achieved anything, he worked extremely hard, weekends,
bank holidays and up to 10 – 12 hours a day physically
and then 3 – 4 hours on a night catching up on his
paperwork. After all this (and in Derek's own words) he
was “Getting nowhere and achieving nothing.”
When I questioned Derek on exactly what he
wanted out of life, what his personal and business goals
were, guess what? That's right, he had no idea! We had a
session on how to effectively set and achieve goals and
goal planning and I explained the importance of reviewing
goals on a regular basis.
Derek returned the following week with an
effective goal planning and setting strategy and we set
to work! The outcome of this story is that not only did
Derek recover from his high stress levels, he also
contracted a lot of work out because he was getting to
much.
After a few sessions on effective sales
techniques and marketing, eventually Derek spent 80% of
his time on the telephone and 20% of his time overseeing
work to subcontractors and earned 3 times as much as he
did working all hours and damaging his health.
The main point I am trying to make here is that
Derek would not (and was not able to) have achieved any
of this without a personal goal planning strategy and
review procedure. Derek was a true, real life, honest to
goodness living example of the expression “Those Who Do
Not Set Goals Spend Their Lives Achieving Other People's”
because that is exactly what he was doing, and making
himself ill in the process.
