You Are Only As Good As Your Last Training
Session
Don't Let Ego Stand In Your Way Of
Success My Kung Fu teacher shared a story with me
about his experience of achieving his black sash many
years ago. His Sifu (teacher) at the time asked him a
question “How much better will you be after you take this
(black sash) grading? How much more of a marital artist
will you be? How much will you have improved when you
achieve your black sash?”
His answer was quite an astute one (and I would
have expected nothing less from him!) “About as good as
the length of the training session.”
You see he understood that you are only as good
as your last training session and if you believe anything
otherwise you are on dangerous territory... the territory
of ego!
Ego can be terribly destructive because it can
get in the way of self improvement, goal setting and
achievement. Once you believe that you have reached a
pinnacle or know everything there is to know about
something you cease to improve.
Once you cease to improve you stagnate, when you
stagnate you quickly start to slide back and get worse.
Apart from this article starting to sound like is was
written by Yoda I am trying to make a very important
point. Ego is not only an unpleasant trait in someone it
is also incredibly destructive.
If we are always striving to improve our
performance in anything, no matter what that may be from
business to hobbies and past times and sport we must make
sure that we do not let complacency and ego get in the
way and we must remember that we are only as good as our
last training session, performance or
practice.
Only by observing this principle can we ensure
that we give ourselves honest feedback to build upon to
achieve our goals and true potential and of course it
doesn't stop there. If we follow the principle through to
its logical conclusion and we achieve our goals we do not
sit back on our laurels and gloat, we use that experience
to set new goals and apply the principle again to improve
some more and so on, always striving for honest
improvement.
